Be the Best Version of Yourself

Updated: Aug 31, 2020

Must of us prefer to stay in our comfort zone and do the same things repeatedly. It is easier to do the same things when we are in our element. When we start doing things out of our comfort zone, we often feel scared, uncomfortable and this prevents us from exploring or taking risks. To become the best version of yourself you need to come out of your comfort zone. Sometimes, being fired is the best thing that ever happened to many people. Why? Because after being fired, they created their own businesses or obtained better job opportunities. The first step to become a better version of yourself is by writing down your ideal self.

For example: I will do things when I say I am going to do them, I will only eat healthy, I will not compare myself to others, I will celebrate small wins, I will review and take action on my goals daily, I will not doubt myself.

Here are some tips that you can start doing to become a better version of yourself:

  1. Learn to say no. My partner often asked me to do something for him and it was hard to say no initially. I felt bad about saying no to him. This year's resolution for myself was to not feel bad about my decisions and I started by saying no when needed. When i started applying this small changes I felt better and I have more time to do my own things.

  2. Forgive yourself. When I started my job, I had nightmares about making mistakes and how bad I felt if a patient stayed in the hospital because I couldn’t figure out the discharge plan. My coworker told me something that stuck with me: besides being a social worker, we are humans and we make mistakes. In other words, we need to forgive ourselves when we make mistakes. Just learn from your mistakes and move on.

  3. Stop negative self-talk. Self-talk is that little voice inside of us cheering us on a positive path or knocking us down negatively. We need to control the negative self-talk and switch to positive self-talk. Our brain is usually trying to keep us safe and can be on a state of fear. We can switch from negative to positive very easily but having the ability to do it is a skill. Start switching negative thoughts for positive ones on a daily basis. This will make a huge difference.

  4. Embrace change as an opportunity to learn. When I obtained the opportunity for a promotion in my job with another assignment, I was excited to do so. However, as time passed I overthought things and haddidn’t want to change assignment. I even told my supervisor that I didn’t want to move. She said that my assignment was already changed. I was grateful that I couldn’t back down because the learning that I have obtained on my new assignment provided me with a wealth of knowledge and growth that I couldn’t have gotten on my previous assignment.

  5. Learn something new every day. I am very curious and always asking how to do things. I am not afraid of asking when I do not know something. This is the way I learn every day. Google is my best friend when I need an answer.

Becoming the best version of yourself will take time and changing your mindset about how we act, react and behave in every situation. We can’t control our environment, but we can control how we react to it.
